I’ve been searching for creative outlets all of my life. You name it, and I’ve probably tried it. Writing, singing, dancing, acting, and untold numbers of arts and crafts. But it was not until I discovered making things with hot glass that I felt a wave of peace and serenity wash over me, and I knew that I had found a place I would remain for a long, long time.
I can still remember the first time I saw someone working with hot glass. It was a man blowing glass at Greenfield Village, which is near Detroit, Michigan, where I spent most of my life. Seeing a tiny green vase come to life in that man’s hands was miraculous to me! However, for many years after that, I just assumed that working with hot glass was something “other” people did--not “ordinary” people like me.
Then, in the winter of 1999-2000, while making jewelry, I discovered lampworked beads. I was amazed, fascinated, mesmerized . . . obsessed! I searched everywhere I could for beads and for information about them. I started buying beads made by other artists until I had a fairly nice collection. Finally, I just had to learn how to make them myself. I took my first class in February 2001, and I haven’t looked back since!
