Harvey Mudd College was founded in 1955 by a committee of the Claremont Colleges consortium in cooperation with the family of Harvey S. Mudd, a mining engineer and co-founder of one of the richest copper mines in the world, Cyprus Mines. Although Harvey Mudd died shortly before the college was established in 1955, the Mudd family went forward with plans to make this important institution a reality. Designed to overcome many of the shortcomings of traditional, narrow technical training, HMC has become a leader in science, mathematics and engineering education. Our mission is to educate undergraduate men and women in a demanding academic setting, focusing on mathematics, science and engineering and to provide a rich background in the humanities and social sciences.
All of our full-time faculty members hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees in their fields, have graduated from, and taught at, the finest universities in the world. At HMC, students have access to an unbeatable combination: bright, accomplished, interesting professors who are devoted to teaching and who chose HMC so they could work with the nation's top undergrads.
Harvey Mudd College has thrived over the years, proving that its approach is not only sound, but sought after. Each year about 1,600 applications are received to fill an entering class of just 175. Today, 700 undergraduate women and men challenge themselves in our classrooms, labs and libraries.
