Description
Over 150 years ago, Charles Hager founded a company. He also established a tradition. A family tradition - one where being successful in business was also a matter of family pride. Five generations later, that heritage lives on through the Hager family members who now manage the most diverse line of hardware products and services in the industry.
In 1849, an apprentice locksmith from Germany moved to St. Louis and obtained a job as a forger in a blacksmith shop. Within the year his employer joined the gold rush, allowing him to purchase the business, and soon he was doing a brisk business forging metal wagon wheel rims and making hinges for the Conestoga wagons, which were leaving St. Louis in large numbers for the new frontier.
His name was Charles Hager, and thus the C.Hager & Sons Hinge Manufacturing Company was founded. Charles Hager brought the first hinge manufacturing machinery to St. Louis in 1873. Up to that time, hinges were made by the more time consuming method of forging. Around 1900, machinery was designed and built at the plant to further speed up the hinge making process to meet the high demand for hinges for both commercial and residential purposes.
