History
Since graduating in 1991 in Home Economics (Clothing and Interior) from the University of Pretoria Hanlie has worked for two decorators in South Africa. Four and a half years had been with Engela Smith, a member of the South African Guild of Interior Designers. Jointly with the owner they designed the interiors of many homes, official residences, embassies, and various commercial buildings.
A highlight of her career with Engela Smith Interiors was the publication of her work in the April 1997 issue of the influential monthly South African Garden and Home. Whilst working with Engela Smith, she attended the 1995 Decorex Exhibition in London.
She spent almost three years (May 1997 – March 2000) residing in Bangkok, Thailand. She started her own interior consultancy in the security ‘expat’ community where she lived.
