Description

Hantam Community Education Trust, winner of the Nelson Mandela State President's Prize for Community Initiative, is a non-profit organisation which brings education and primary health care to rural, previously disadvantaged communities in the barren Northern Cape region of South Africa. The success of this project has been it's sustainablility. From its inception, 15 years ago, as a pre-school for the children of farm workers on a few neighbouring farms, the project has grown into an early childhood development programme; a school offering classes from Grade R to Grade 9; a skills training programme for learners, adults and unemployed youths; a small business development programme; an in-service training programme for teachers; a bursary programme to enable successful students from the area to undergo tertiary education; and a primary health care and education clinic. Listening to the community, responding to real needs. Delivery on promises. Develop the project incrementally and formulate achievable goals. Performance and progress must be closely monitored. The maintenance of high standards of accountablility both to the community as well as donors. Ensure project's sustainablility. The most important component of this project is it's people. They are all drawn from the community; for that reason they are committed to serving their people and making a difference. Creating an enabling environment gives people reason for hope - they start assuming responsiblity for their own lives.
