Description

It would appear that most professional harpists start training in utero . I was audacious enough to start as an adult in the early 1990’s. With a degree in biomedical illustration, I was art directing for an ad agency at the time and illustrating books. I didn’t own a harp. Nor did I have a teacher, but I’m a determined girl with nerves of steel. I didn’t see it as a problem.

Granted, I didn't come to it cold. Growing up overseas, mostly in southeastern England, I had played piano since I was old enough to reach the keys, encouraged by musical parents. I grew up immersed in the history and music of the British Isles, which would eventually become my passion on the harp. During the years of piano lessons, I began composing and arranging music. Happily, the piano and the harp bear striking similarities to one another, and so taking up the harp was a logical extension of my piano studies. But a harp was out of my budget when I was young and wasn’t something easily moved between countries, so it remined tantalizingly out of reach for several years to come.

Several years ago, I graduated as a Certified Music Practitioner through the nationally-recognized MHTP (Music for Healing and Transition Program, http: //www.mhtp.org/ ), combining my love of all things medical, working with people, and the music I adore. The program trained me to take music to the bedsides of critically ill or dying patients to create a peaceful environment conducive to healing or easing end of life.
