The Noa Noa shops originated in 1981 on the island of Saipan in Micronesia. In 1983 Noa Noa opened a store in Kona, Hawaii. Today their five shops on the Big Island of Hawaii, Maui and Oahu are a wonderful collection of batik clothing, jewelry, artifacts and antiques from the South Pacific and Southeast Asia. They have the largest variety of Tapa in Hawaii (if not the world) and sell pieces from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Sumatra, Toraja, Irian Jaya, Borneo and Papua New Guinea. Their mask collection includes ceremonial and dance masks from many of the islands of Indonesia. Their textiles include Ikats and supplemental woven fabrics from Indonesia, Laos and Cambodia. In addition they sell tribal drums, 12th to 19th century Chinese ceramics, paddles from Borneo and Sumatra and a variety of other artifacts that are collected by owner Joan Smoyer. Joan Smoyer designs the fabric and manufactures all of the resort oriented natural fiber batik clothing that is sold at the Noa Noa stores. The fabrics used include cotton, linen, silk, rayon, cotton jersey, and hand woven cotton. Their motifs include Hawaiian tapa, quilt and petroglyph designs, tapa designs from the South Pacific as well as batik interpretations of African tapestries, Japanese motifs of basket and mat carved designs. They produce clothing for men and women and a wide range of accessories that includes bags, scarves and sarongs. Their range of sizes starts at XS and include XXL in several styles for men and women. The quality of their fabric and European dyes assure permanence of color and durability. All of their clothes are sewed with French seams, they use coconut or hand made shell buttons and yes, most of their styles have pockets!
