Description

Animal lovers the world over share one common idea: nobody's pet (insert species here) is as (insert superlative adjectives here) as their own. The phrase "a face only a mother could love" definitely could have originated in this community of unwavering devotees. Enter any pet specialty store, and you'll see throngs seeking just the right treats for their furry friends. When it comes to specialty stores, Pookie's Bow Wow Bakery takes the cake... or actually, bakes the cake, and cookies, and pizzas. Freshly made treats with human-grade ingredients fill the air with an enticing aroma. Reading the ingredients list is like making a list for the grocery store: banana, peanut butter, applesauce, parmesan cheese, etc. And don't forget birthdays! You've never seen a happier dog than one sitting down to their own "pawty" cake, complete with custom frosting and edible decorations; or a cat who's people have finally discovered yummy liver treats.

Pookie's new owners, Marcia Sundberg and Melissa Gosik, found their opportunity to make a dream come true when they bought the store this Spring. Not only was the idea of a bakery for pets exciting to them, but the broader purpose the store serves with its extensive line of wholesome and holistic pet foods was appealing. "You wouldn't want to know what's really in (some) of those common store brands" comments Marcia. Their research, not only through reading literature, but also by consulting local veterinarian Dr. Sandy Fink, has convinced them that the store is on the right track. Anecdotal evidence abounds: sleeker coats, improved energy, proper weight gain or loss; customers are eager to share their success stories. Not to mention the additional bonus of having people bring their pets in to the store to visit!

Marcia and Melissa are adding their own influences and personalities into the store, starting with a new logo that reflects their interest in retro art and design. "We want it to be fun!" says Melissa. A 1956 Lincoln convertible was used as the inspiration for the car, with a happy dog going along for the ride (oh joy! my favorite!) while the cool cat takes the wheel (of course). That's just the beginning, they promise. Improvements and additions to the store's product line and appearance are in the works. Stop in and say hi, and find new ways to show your appreciation for your pet's companionship and unconditional love.
