- Originally started in 1994 by Ken and Anita Hess as an herb shop, the name was chosen for its reference to the ancient medicinal herb plants and formulas that have been handed down from our ancestors. HERBS & HEIRLOOMS quickly became HERBS & HEIRLOOMS and HOMEBREW too! due to the fact that Ken, being a beer and wine maker himself, kept jugs and bottles sitting around the shop with their contents merrily fermenting. Customers who have never seen the process of fermentation (the process of turning water, sugar, yeast and barley or grapes into a alcoholic beverage) were to say the least surprised as to how beer and wine was made. We were asked if we could help them make their own quality beer & wines at home, so-o-o, one thing led to another as these things sometimes do and HERBS & HEIRLOOMS and HOMEBREW too! was born.
