Hillside Angus Farm emphasizes the Angus Female. At Hillside Angus Farm we have tied our selection process to the strict guidelines of the American Angus Association’s Pathfinder program which awards a very select group of high-performing females the permanent designation of Pathfinder “#” on their pedigrees. The Pathfinder status acknowledges superior weaning performance, early puberty, high fertility and exceptional mothering ability earned by qualifying females after the weaning of their third calf. In 2006 only .006 percent of registered Angus females earned the Pathfinder status from the 1,495,369 performance-tested Angus females that were examined for the award that year. The Pathfinder selection criterion helps us to select females with proven performance under very strict criterion to build our genetic model for consistency in the most important economic traits for beef production. Hillside Angus Farm has been performance testing and using the Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) program since 1982 to select the bloodlines that achieve our objective. Currently at Hillside Angus Farm 14% of our cow herd are Pathfinder Cows. Hillside Angus Farm breeds for a balanced, high-performance Female. We select for superior fertility, excellent mothering ability, adequate milk, sound udder structure, growth, carcass, phenotype and longevity. At Hillside Angus Farm our goal is to produce Angus seedstock that is able to perform at the top of all levels of production. We will not give up any one economic trait in order to be extreme in another. We want to produce as many of the really good ones as we have to take care of and insist they be top performers in all traits. We have been striving for this goal since 1982. We breed and perpetuate our hightest performance females to the best, high-performance and high-accuracy bulls available in the Angus population. Hillside Angus Farm stacks generation after generation of the breed's best genetics in every planned mating.
