- The Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council created the concept for Hire L-A through a grant from the Bell Atlantic Foundation and help from local community partners including Liberty Mutual, the Maine Department of Labor, and Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. The project evolved from a need for local businesses to find employees to fill job openings efficiently and effectively. The Growth Council sought to create an easy-to-use and widely accessible electronic database to match job candidates with employers.
