Title

National Homeless Coalition ::

Description

The National Homeless Coalition was founded in New York City by George Kopp shortly after September 11, 2001. George Kopp was living and working in Manhattan on 9/11 during the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and US Pentagon.

George, along with many fellow New Yorkers, made numrous efforts to volunteer time, food and clothing to those conducting the rescue effort at ground zero. The level of support given was tremendous: So many people volunteered that many were turned away, hospitals had to ask people who wished to donate blood to come back the following week, so much food was donated that a significant portion ended up at local homeless shelters.

A friend of George's decided to rent a van and call everyone he knew asking them to donate any socks, t-shirts, sweatshirts and other clothing which could be worn by the firefighters and volunteers at ground zero who were working in the rain. He contacted dozens of people and drove all over the city picking up the donated clothing and eventually dropping it off to the workers at ground zero.
