Title

Molokai Hawaii

Description

Known as the "most Hawaiian" of the main islands, Molokai is a rural, relaxed paradise boasting the highest sea cliffs in the world and the tallest waterfall in Hawai'i. There are no skyscrapers here; no traffic lights. Molokai is for travelers looking to explore natural wonders and embrace the simple purity of old-Hawaii.

Hawaii was once an independent kingdom; each island was a separate domain until 1795, when King Kamehameha united all Hawaii. The charismatic King and his descendants ruled the islands for the next century. When Kamehameha died in 1819, many ancient customs of the "kapu" system were overthrown, and the burgeoning whaling industry and the missionary movement began to alter the islanders' former way of life. Hawaiian traditions began to give way to pressures from modernization. After the sugar industry came to Maui in 1849, laborers were recruited from all over the world to work sugar fields. They brought foreign plants, animals, languages, and customs. By the late 19th century, the U.S. was actively shaping the islands' politics. President McKinley signed an annexation agreement July 7, 1898; Hawaii was granted statehood August 21, 1959.

Hula—According to legend, Laka, goddess of the hula, gave birth to the dance on Molokai, at a sacred place in Ka'ana. The birth of Hula is celebrated each May at the Ka Hula Piko.
