- Why Design? is a showcase of Yuhei Kawaguchi's graphic design portfolio. This website reflects my philosophy towards design: simplicity, functionality and my persona. The name Why Design? is taken from the initial of my first name. Yes, I know it's a little cheesy, but it stems from how I question myself repeatedly about my ideas and concepts towards design. I was inspired by Milton Glaser's lecture for AIGA when he said "I think that being sceptical and questioning all deeply held beliefs is essential." His words struck a cord in my mind because I have always questioned everything in life since I was a child. To this day, I have never been content or felt completely satisfied about my work; for I still question myself relentlessly about my design solutions long after they were made. I had a happy childhood. Nearby my house in Tokyo, I always went to play baseball. Like everybody else, I learned nothing from school and everything from my friends. My life seemed perfect until I faced so-called "reality". My journey of questioning has been started. I dont know exactly why I moved to California, but surfing is the only reason I can think of. I just wanted to surf everyday in the warm weather kick back So.Cal and to find something to make career. Here I am in California for many years, I don't go surf as much as I used to, since I stepped into this graphic design field. But I'm still trying to paddle out there as much as I can as long as waves are there.
