Background
Iconmedia produces progressive news and public affairs programs for community access TV in Austin, Texas, for national broadcast on Free Speech TV (Ch. 9415 on the Dish Network), and for Free Speech Radio News and the Workers Independent News Service. Information about its work on environmental, labor, peace and social justice issues is available at www.iconmedia.org.
Stefan Wray and Pam Thompson started Iconmedia in 1999. Both have produced independent media in Austin since the mid-1990s. Wray has an M.A. in journalism. Thompson has a public relations background. Since 1997 they’ve worked together in radio, first as newscasters on KOOP (91.7 FM), as supporters of low-watt unlicensed radio, and now for Free Speech Radio News. In 2000, they helped start an Austin affiliate of the Independent Media Center.
Their first video documentary, about an unlicensed radio station in San Marcos, Texas, was produced in 1998. Since 2000, they've been producers at the Austin Community Access Center (ACAC). As Iconmedia, Wray and Thompson have produced 18 video programs for cable access TV, of which several have won awards. Iconmedia is now working to have the nationally syndicated news program Democracy Now! broadcast at ACAC.
