About IdeaMason
While collaborating on a large writing project with my business partner, we decided to explore the realm of software tools to help us organize a mountain of materials, sources, and ideas we had generated. I had experienced how hard it is to keep a large amount of information organized when I wrote my first book back in 1998 - Professional NT Services. This time around I was convinced that we could benefit from a tool to help us organize our materials so that we could make the most of our ideas and increase our productivity. We searched for quite awhile for software which would help us. After turning up only software that was cumbersome, buggy, and ill-suited to the task we innocently decided to build a small software application to help us manage our materials. Originally, we only planned on taking a few weeks to concentrate on building a simple tool we hoped would have long-term benefits.
Maybe it was the fact that we both had spent over 15 years in the IT/Software industry that drew us down this path. But as we began to design and develop the software, we couldn’t help thinking about what it would take to build a tool that was more than just a database of ideas and more than just a bibliography generator. We started thinking about how to design a tool that would help us brainstorm, organize our ideas and research, and write. We tried to envision a comprehensive writing tool that would take us from idea to finished document with a much more fluid and flexible interface than that offered by other applications. Before we had more than a basic structure to the software we began experimenting and using it to organize our own research materials and ideas. It was this process of actually using the software while developing it--an iterative and somewhat rare activity in the annals of software development--that led to some dramatic insights and the birth of IdeaMason. MasonWare LLC was formed in 2004 with the goal of bringing IdeaMason to the rest of the world.
Even though we took a long break from writing while we developed IdeaMason and worked to put it on the internet map, we are now returning to the ideas stored in IdeaMason; they have morphed over the past couple of years from our original project into one centered around the creation of IdeaMason and the wild and fascinating experience of running a company on the Internet.
