The global broadband market is moving from early adopter to critical mass. The number of household broadband users in the US alone is expected to grow from 48 million today to 73 million in 2005, according to research by eMarketer. More importantly, the market is already moving from a single service offering of high-speed data to multi-services such as voice, video, and data. Despite significant investment in networks and back-office support systems, the vision of the broadband connected home is a long way from reality for tier 1 broadband operators in North America.
In the late 1990's the lack of standards for cable modems, set-top boxes, and billing systems presented the opportunity for several entrepreneurial software firms to develop platforms that provide the critical interfaces required to enable broadband operators to launch high-speed Internet services. These platforms are commonly known as provisioning and service activation systems (PSAs).
With a high number of integrations required for these platforms to be effective, the North American cable industry has increased its dependency over the past five years on platforms that may require significant development efforts and third-party licenses. This will mean high costs to enable and support the critical next wave of broadband services. To avoid this, Interactive Enterprise chose to architect a multi-service platform for its Conexon product from the start.
