Local IHAD programs adopt entire grade levels from elementary schools or entire age-groups from public housing developments and provide the children with tutoring, mentoring, academic enrichment, cultural and recreational activities and individual attention for a period of eight to twelve years. The East Palo Alto chapter of IHAD began in 1992 through the initiative of several graduate students at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
