We get the most amazing letters and e-mails. I wish I could share with you the experience of reading them as they come in! Editing a journal is a lot like making art—it's a lonely experience. So when one of these notes arrives (and they're doing so with increasing frequency) it's profoundly moving. When people write us, they're not dashing off perfunctory thank you notes— they're crafting testimonials .
“I have been reading the new issue of Image late into the night and have been struck by the ‘beauty of holiness' therein. In their works and words, the writers and artists in Image bind and unbind, standing on the solid ground of the known while leaning into the unknown. To use a term from chemistry, they are multivalent—meaning that even though they are separate, they have an intrinsic power on (not over) each other. You may take the word they in the last sentence as referring to the writers/artists, the binding/unbinding, the known/unknown.”
A note like this shows us that our work has touched another person , that the vision of Image —the transformation of church and culture through the renewal of the religious imagination—is a widely shared vision.
