About InnerAsia - Tibetan Rugs

128.2lowres1.2.jpg

Tibet has captured the imagination of the West as the pristinely pure, isolated other worldly Shangri-la. Many do not realize how receptive to new ideas Tibet’s nomadic culture has been throughout its history. Whether it is Buddhism from India or textile designs from China, Tibetans always take on new ideas and turn them into something refreshing with great flair and finesse. It is through centuries of melding and mixing that such a rich amalgam of Tibetan culture is formed. This dynamic process of synthesis is at the heart of Tibetan creativity.

InnerAsia is recognized as the custodian of Tibet’s rug weaving heritage as it has been instrumental in revitalization of this illustrious heritage. Gangchen Carpets are handcrafted today in Tibet with the same standards of excellence of the past that met the demands of the Tibetan aristocracy. In addition to producing the only authentic Tibetan rugs in the international market, InnerAsia is proud to continue the tradition of innovation with the new lines of contemporary collections as well with silk blend in.

The Man Behind The Company

TashiVT.jpg

Kesang Tashi, a native of Tibet, was instrumental in revitalizing his country's centuries-old rug weaving heritage. When Kesang Tashi returned to Tibet in 1986, and saw that this art form was rapidly disappearing, he initiated Tibet's own arts and crafts movement committed to integrity design, craftsmanship, and material.

The result is InnerAsia Trading Company and its Gangchen Carpets of Tibet.

Today, InnerAsia and Kesang Tashi is able to "give-back" to his homeland through the livelihood he generates for Tibetan weavers, wool carders, yarn spinners, and nomadic sheepherders who contribute to creating Gangchen Carpets. Kesang Tashi believes in sustaining our most valuable resources for the future. To further this belief he created a scholarship fund for Tibetan children, and is involved in conservation measures with The Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh to benefit the Gyalthang (Tashi’s hometown) Forestry Conservation Fund. Khawachen is InnerAsia’s Rug Weaving Center in Lhasa, Tibet, which opened in 1994 added its new on-site daycare center in May, 2000 for the children of the families working at the handicraft center.

The Philosophy

InnerAsia Stands for Uncompromising Integrity.

  • We are driven to deliver a product that our customers will be proud to use.
  • Gangchen is our signature, so we don't put it on anything unless it meets our rigorous standards of quality.
  • We strive to provide the best possible supporting service, putting the customer's needs first.
  • We are dedicated to the principle of achievement through partnership with our clients.

Romancing the Carpet

Authenticity = Status. In the world of designer labels, prestige cars, and embroidered logos, it's clear that status sells. People want to be associated with prestige merchandise. They look for the unique and certainly the authentic. Gangchens are peerless. They're the only authentic Tibetan carpets, made exclusively in Tibet, true to Tibetan aesthetic (design) integrity, craftsmanship and material. Gangchen carpets are to carpet what Mercedes is to a car or what Armani and Ralph Lauren are to fashion.

MESSAGE: Status is a proven motivation for buying!

A bit of history: Tibetan rug weaving is an ancient art dating back to the 11th Century. Rugs were used in both humble homes and grand palaces. Also in monasteries as prayer rugs, placed on bed for decorative use, for sleeping on, and wall hangings. They were made to be taken on pilgrimages, trade expeditions, picnics, and weddings.

Gangchen Carpets of Tibet

135.jpg

Tibetans call their homeland "Gangchen" - Land of Snows.

Gangchen Carpets are so named because they carry the distinction of being the true representation of the Tibetan rug-weaving heritage, which dates back to the 11th century. This proud heritage is an integral part of the Tibetan culture. The full appreciation of the Gangchen Carpets of Tibet can best be understood in the context of Tibetan culture, geography and people.

Every aspect of the Gangchen Carpet is Tibetan - beginning with the use of pure Tibetan Northern Highland wool, the uncompromised traditional method of hand-carding and hand spinning of yarn, and weaving by the skilled craftsmen in the renowned Tibetan rug weaving centers of Gyangze, Shigatse, Nethong and Lhasa. Designs and symbolism in the Gangchen Carpets and the brilliant execution of the colors are all a distinct part of this proud heritage.

The Gangchen Distinction

Start with the best material and you get the best result. That's why Gangchens are made exclusively from the finest "Changphel" or Tibetan Highland Sheep Wool. Prized for its thick, long fiber, outstanding tensile strength, and high luster, this wool is absolutely the best for carpets.

Why so important? Because not all wool is created equal! Equate using the best wood with its exquisite grain, like walnut, to create fine furniture, with the quality of the Tibetan Highland sheep wool used for creating Gangchen Carpets. Just as the grain is the distinguishing factor in contributing to the furniture's look and inherent value. The special quality of the wool in Gangchens is the factor that distinguishes an extraordinary Gangchen carpet from one that is ordinary.

Durability: Fibers are thick and long, averaging six inches in length. Exceptional thickness of fiber adds to the luster of the Gangchens. Intrinsically strong and resilient, the fiber imparts durability to the pile, enabling it to withstand abrasion through the life of the rug.

Luster The cuticles or scale-like structures on the fibers of these Tibetan Highland sheep are larger than those found on other sheep. Large scales mean a smoother surface, which is more reflective in light, better displaying the color and creating a splendid sheen and a radiant luster, unique to Gangchens alone.

Coloration No other fiber takes and holds dye like Tibetan Highland sheep wool. Color actually seeps into the core of the fiber, dyeing from the inside out, so color is richer, more saturated, and more vibrant.

Gangchen designs are both timeless and timely! We think of it as a dynamic process that uses tradition to rejuvenate tradition!

The all important wool factor

InnerAsia’s rugs are woven from Changphel or Northern Highland sheep wool. These pure-breed species dwell under extreme harsh climate of the Tibet highlands at elevations above 14,000 feet. There is little wonder the sheep’s wool fiber grows very thick and very long. The physical quality of Changphel wool rug piles are evident in the springy feel when walking on, yet durable to be enjoyed for a lifetime and then pass on to posterity as family heirloom. Aesthetically, Changphel wool fiber has a thicker surface area which is more light reflective and shows off the color brilliantly.

Imparting a soul to the rug with the passion

Every one of InnerAsia’s rug is woven by superbly skillful Tibetan weavers from a rug weaving culture. They weave their rugs with great passion and impart every Gangchen carpet they weave with a soul and spirited interpretation of the design. The result is a rug that smiles at you and enriches your home warmth and great cheer.

Symbols

Buddhist symbols represent the tenets of spiritual philosophy, as well as the secular world of well being. The stamped cross pattern pays homage to the Tibetan warrior horseman. Fruits are auspicious symbols of peace and goodwill, while amulets speak of luck, longevity, and protection from negative energies. These symbols provide Gangchen carpets with intriguing design motifs, imbued with inspirational significance.

Timeless Collection

The Timeless Collection from InnerAsia draws its inspiration from the work of Kolomon Moser and Joseph Hoffman, two of the most influential artists in Vienna during the period of 1900-1930. Moser in particular, was highly influenced by Japanese Katagami Art. Like the pieces of the period, the carpets in Timeless Collection are aesthetically beautiful and functional works of art.

GC-21 Monsoon 270x375.jpg

Caligraphic Collection

Inspired by meditation, a contemplative practice that frees the mind of clutter, these calligraphic designs reflect the stark beauty of shapes and forms found in nature.

Wildlife

In many cultures, the tiger symbolizes strength and power. The Gangchen tigers, rendered in both realistic and abstract forms, are a reminder that the excessive nature of man's ego stands as an obstacle to the path of enlightenment. These wildlife designs are also a compassionate substitute for a pelt, reflecting an inherent respect for life and nature's creatures and it's environment.

Luxurious Texture Collection

InnerAsia’s focus on subtle and masterful interplay of organic elements creates exquisitely beautiful texture imaginable in a woven rug. The elements at play are wool, silk, color and magical weaving to create dimensionality and texture through contrast of uncut loop against luxurious pile. The designs such as “Moss Field”, “Leaves & Loops” are evocative of the refined elegance of Zen aesthetics. The result is ever presence of warmth and beauty that greets you with a smile which enriches your home, your ultimate sanctuary.

KT-04D Plum 270x375.jpg

Floral

Gangchens come in an abundance of floral designs, all brilliant colors. These are a tribute to Tibetan's fondness for flowers. The most pervasive floral design in Tibet is Lotus which is a Buddhist metaphor for human potential for realization of wisdom and compassion. It grows out of mud, yet in spite of its humble origins, it attains perfection. Therefore, the Lotus is not only a symbol of beauty but also of hope.

Cultural Tibet Series

We have also added ten fresh limited edition designs to the Cultural Tibet Series. Each fun and whimsical scene evokes an aspect of folk life; from a country horse festival, to village children at play, to Tibetan pilgrims circumambulating the holy sites. These themes capture an endearing portrayal of Tibetan folk culture. Each story is back dropped by the unspoiled beauty of the natural landscape with its towering Tibetan peaks and breathtaking sky.

Shi-Nay Collection

SOPHISTICATED. RELAXED. COMFORT IN THE HOME. Shi-Nay, in Tibetan, means tranquility. The deep calm that ensues when one emerges from meditation. Shi-Nay carpets are designed to inspire just such a feeling. The soft, velvety texture and livable designs and colors are designed to help create a relaxed and comfortable feeling in the home. Nowadays, home is the sanctuary, the refuge. A place to cocoon oneself away from the hectic world outside. Inside, a Shi-Nay carpet makes a statement without taking over. For many years our dealers and friends have requested a different look in addition to Gangchen. Shi-Nay fills this request, by providing a contemporary look in popular colors at a lower price point. At the same time, Shi-Nay carpets are woven using the same standard of excellence as Gangchen: only hand-carded, hand-spun 100% Tibetan Highland Sheep wool.
