IONA Senior Services : Experts on Aging

IONA Senior Services is a nonprofit community organization located in northwest Washington, DC. IONA is dedicated to enabling older people to live with dignity and independence. Through its professional staff, corps of volunteers and close collaboration with other organizations, IONA provides services and access to programs designed to meet the needs of seniors and their families. IONA educates and advocates to achieve a deeper understanding of and a strong community commitment to seniors.
IONA Senior Services was established in 1975 to respond to the growing needs and number of people aged 60 years and older. It has received wide recognition as a model agency for providing community- and home-based professional and volunteer assistance to seniors and their caregivers. Thirty-three churches and synagogues are members of IONA. More than 40 professional employees and 600 volunteers working in close collaboration with numerous community and government organizations provide services that meet the needs of seniors and their families. Since 1980, IONA Senior Services has served as the Lead Agency for the DC Office on Aging (DCOA) for Ward 3 and parts of Wards 1, 2 and 4, including Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, and Dupont Circle. While elderly residents living in this service area have access to DCOA fee subsidies, our programs are available to all seniors and caregivers in the DC metropolitan area.
IONA Senior Services' Isabella Breckinridge Center was built with donations raised by the community on land donated by the DC Government. Named for the mother of Mrs. Jefferson Patterson, a generous building campaign supporter, the Center opened in April 1997 and houses many of IONA's programs, including our Alzheimer's Care Programs, Counseling and Care Management Services, Support Groups, Computer and Fitness Classes, and Information and Referral Service.
