Iris Test Garden has been located in St. John, Washington since its purchase from Austin Morgan in 1994. It is currently a family business owned and operated by Jim & Janet Leifer Family. We are located in the middle of the Palouse Wheat Country in Southeaster Washington, and Iris Test Garden is surrounded by wheat and barley fields. Our children are Larissa (21), Litney (19) and Logan (13), plus foster children who come into our home. It has been our pleasure to serve the needs of iris lovers and we plan on growing as a family & business in the years to come.
Iris Test Garden is always open to visitors. We are located approximately 65 miles south of Spokane, Washington. From Spokane drive south 50 miles on highway 195 to Steptoe, turn west on highway 23 and drive 14 miles to St. John, turn south in St. John on Endicott-St. John Rd., and drive 1.1 miles to our garden. From Sprague, drive east 29 miles on highway 23 to St. John and turn south on Endicott-St. John Rd. When you can get to St. John (a community of 500 people) just stop and ask anyone in town, and they can direct you to our home. Be sure to allow time to visit our friendly businesses downtown. Local facilities that can provide meals are Sherry Lynn's (648-3759), The Rialto (648-3876) and with reservations, Barb Kile's Elegant Luncheons (648-3466). St. John also has a city park with picnic tables, playground equipment and restroom facilities. It's a short trip of 15 miles to Endicott to visit Pleasant Times (657-3727) for teas and luncheons (with reservations, please).
Iris Test Garden has approximately 2500 iris varieties on 12 acres of ground. We limit our catalog listings to a few hundred, but when visitors tour the garden a much wider selection is available. If an iris was unavailable last year, you are welcome to order it upon receiving the 2004 catalog. We are still working on updating our website with "search engines" so you can readily find iris that you'd like. However, that is a "several winters" project and is not complete.
