- Other fungal infections can affect Aids patients and those with a weak immune system, such as cancer patients or patients with a transplant who are on immunosuppressants. Chromomycosis is one of these normally rare other fungal infections in the tropics or subtropics. It starts with an infection of a skin wound. The fungus is producing melanin, which leads to a darker pigmented skin appearance. Other fungal infections are phaeohyphomycosis or mucormycosis. The latter starts in sinuses and can lead to meningitis.
