Description

The Jacksonville Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. Our mission is to find loving homes for all animals and to provide education and counseling to foster responsible pet-people relationships resulting in the humane treatment of all animals.

The Jacksonville Humane Society is funded by individual donations, wills and bequests, and money received from shelter service. We do not receive any state or federal funding nor are we a United Way agency.

The Jacksonville Humane Society was established in 1885 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In 1920, with the donation of 10 acres of land by the Society's President, E. Fleming Bowden, it was reorganized as the Humane Society. In 1924, the Society's first shelter opened as the Humane Society's Rest Farm. The Society was renamed The Jacksonville Humane Society, Inc. In 1958, and still remains on the same 10 acres on Beach Boulevard.
