The predecesor of The Jacksonville News was The Jacksonville Republican, which was begun by Dr. Thomas W. Ayers in the late 19th century.
Jacksonville was then the county seat and the center of activity. This paper was later moved to Anniston and through several name changes became The Anniston Star.
