John Norris Brown was born in Harriman, TN on March 25, 1981, to George W. and Patricia Norris Brown. His father is an insurance agent, and his mother a college professor (!). He began attending the Harriman City School system in 1986. He graduated from Harriman High School in 1999. That fall, he enrolled at Roane State Community College, where he earned an AA degree in 2001. While at RSCC, he was a staff writer/reporter for the student newspaper, The Roane State Review, as well as the RSCC Playmakers.

The following fall, he began a one year stint at Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN, before transferring to the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2002. At CU, John was a writer for the student newspaper, The Phoenix Review, and was active in Campus Crusade for Christ.

John arrived at UT in 2002, and immediately became involved in the UT College Republicans. He has served on the CR Executive Board, as well as the Executive Board of UT Students for Academic Freedom, an organization designed to stamp out bias and indoctrination on college campuses. He is a weekly columnist for the UT student newspaper, The Daily Beacon. He has also worked as a staff writer for the now defunct East Tennessee Scene, an insert in the Knoxville Journal.
