- J.S. Archer Company was founded in 1913 when Mr. John Standard Archer established a manufacturers’ agency to represent various manufacturers of building materials. The Richmond-based company continued the agency type of business until 1947 when the company was sold to Mr. R. Hughes Smith. Soon after, the company shifted its business focus from a manufactures’ agency to a distributorship, purchasing its own products for resale to customers. It was also during this period that the company began to focus on commercial and industrial doors and operable partitions, adding wood doors and contract hardware in the late 1960s.
