The idea for a National Flag Day may have had humble beginnings, but as sure as the Stars And Stripes inspire greatness and pride, Americans celebrate its value and meaning during today's Flag Day (See story below).
B. T. Cigrand? Know that name as one of a great American patriot? Well, he may not be nearly as well known as Betsy Ross, but his service to the American flag is more than a little noteworthy.
This simple Wisconsin schoolteacher first originated the idea of a “Flag Birthday” back in 1885. His students in the town of Fredonia, at a public school in District 6, worked with him to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as a special day to honor the Stars and Stripes. His wishes went far outside his tiny classroom as he wrote articles over several years calling for a national flag day. In the 1890s, the idea spread to such states as New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois.
