Title

Tomcat JSP/Servlets and Database Web Hosting

Description

The jWebHosting.net team started out in 1998 as servlet developers. We worked with apache and jserv developing corporate intranet sites. When JSP 0.9 was introduced, we started working with JSP technology using Sun's reference servlet container which was eventually turned over to the Apache group and now known as Tomcat. Eventually, we had a need to deploy a medium size web-app on the internet. We searched the marketplace for a servlet container web hosting company. Unfortunately, we found everyone to be either too expensive or lacking in service, features and especially knowledge of the jsp/servlet technology. A light bulb switched on and jWebHosting.net was created to provide inexpensive web hosting services to small business with an emphasis on Java server side processing.

Within a short period, jWebHosting.net customer base grew to 120+ tomcat sites running on four server computers (windows and linux) which were co-located at a large data center in Washington DC, USA. We relied on remote administration of our server software and support from our data center when hardware problems occurred. Our data center was not as responsive in helping us out as we thought. Heard of those horror stories where sites are down for days or weeks? This is usually a hardware or cracked operating system issue that the data center has to handle. It never happened to us, but hardware eventually breaks, OS's get cracked and by judging how our data center reacted to casual network outage inquiries, the shit would have eventually hit the fan and we would be left with a lot of pissed off customers - something we never experienced before and had no intention of experiencing now or ever. After no luck in finding a data center to take care of our physical server hardware and disaster recovery requirements (at a reasonable cost to stay competitive), we decided to abandon our shared web hosting service. We felt it was better left to web hosting companies who managed their own *local* network gear and *local* server farms. We then started looking for a jsp/servlet web hosting company to move our customer's tomcat sites to. After a few months of searching, we felt Kattare Internet Services had the best *local* network and server farm environment for hosting jsp/servlet projects. Kattare's private jvm/tomcat server setup and general server configuration was well thought out and implemented. We tested it for several weeks before committing to supporting a migration to Kattare servers. It's hard to beat a linux/apache base server computer for providing a secured environment to develop and deploy web sites based on distributed web and jsp/servlet servers sharing the load. It just blows away the windows 2K/IIS5 servers we were using. We then proceeded to offer the Kattare java packages to our existing customers. All, but a few (windows) customers moved over to a Kattare linux/apache server computer and the rest is history.

jWebHosting.net has always had a great reputation for support, specifically helping our customers out with jsp/servlet web-app deployment, programming and design issues. We decided to continue on by reselling Kattare's java web hosting packages and offering value added incentives and services for signing up through us - specifically a free Setup on a Kattare server and *real* jsp/servlet support. Most web hosting companies or resellers do not offer programming support in addition to hosting a customer's web site. Kattare tries and does very well. But like they say, two heads are better than one. So keep us in mind if you get stuck with a java issue. We are now moving into jBoss and will be offering free support in that area too if you signup for the Kattare Corporate Plus account which includes jBoss 3. Anyway, thanks for stopping by to hear our story. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
