A WORD OF WARNING. It is increasingly difficult to find authentic furniture that has not been re-painted or put together from parts of different pieces. While the "Tibetan-style" cabinets and boxes that come out of Chinese furniture warehouses these days, are easily identified as replicas, some of the fake furniture coming from Lhasa is much harder to recognize. From photographs it is almost impossible to tell, and in most instances the repainting is done on an old wooded structure. It is misleading to date Tibetan painted furniture from when the wooden structure was made, even though it has been re-painted recently. Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to determine the state of the original paintwork without removing the heavy synthetic varnish applied almost universally to furniture in Tibet these days. In our workshop we remove this new varnish to assess the state of the paint-work of each pieces.

For more information about Tibetan furniture please see the publication WOODEN WONDERS: TIBETAN FURNITURE IN SECULARE AND RELIGIOUS LIFE, Ed. By David Kamansky, November 2004, which includes the article "Tibetan furniture, Its Construction and Use in Tibetan Society", by Luca and Camilla Corona.
