Description
When an old door is closing and a new door is opening, there is always an aha! moment, a spark that lights the blaze of understanding. I had a very important moment when I went to New York to visit a friend a number of years ago. My friend was studying with a gifted teacher named Michael Warren and she encouraged me to take a lesson with him.
During my first lesson (and incidentally, I spent money I had taken to attend Broadway plays on more lessons!) he helped me to unlock some power in my voice that had been hidden. Suddenly it burst free. My reaction was a mixture of joy and grief. Joy for what I had found, and grief for wasted years. But, in the midst of the grief and with the help of my friend, I had the wisdom to realize I hadn’t been ready before. When the student is ready the teacher will appear.
On my way to my second lesson, I turned right not left from my friend’s apartment, and so ended up on the wrong Manhatten subway line. After a momentary feeling of panic, I figured out I could still get there on that line and got on the first train that came along. As I sat on the train, my eye was caught by a poster on the opposite wall. The quote from George Eliot spoke right to me. “It’s never too late to be what you could have been.”
