Even as a young child, The Katydid Collection owner and founder Katy Messersmith had a flair for fashion and an entrepreneurial spirit, always asking her mother to sell her latest creations. However, it was in Ghana, Africa where Katy truly tested her skills as a designer. After graduating from Texas A&M University, Katy headed to Ghana for an eight-week stint as a volunteer at a women\'s health clinic. When Katy\'s luggage ended up in Greece, Katy was left with only the clothes on her back and her savvy design skills. Each day, she worked with the local seamstress to make her design ideas come to life. While her first trips to the seamstress were out of necessity, it took little time for Katy to become inspired by the creative process. Soon she was designing handbags from the beautiful local fabrics, and the first "Katydid" creations were born.
After returning to the U.S., Katy was hired as a project manager in the pharmaceutical industry. Two years years later, having not found the same fulfillment from her traditional career as she had when designing, Katy decided to start a business doing the thing she loved - designing. Katy created a Web site, shopforbags.com, where she was one of the first wholesalers of cigar box purses. Scouring cigar shops on every business trip, Katy was soon creating and selling her purses to boutiques throughout the country. Katy even recruited her boyfriend Kenny to help her on nights and weekends in order to keep up with demand.
Soon after, Katy began creating her own line of handbags, mixing fabrics and styles as she had when she was in Ghana. Today The Katydid Collection has grown considerably from the first days in Ghana. While still utilizing unique fabrics, the collection provides funky and feminine styles to suite fashionable women of all ages - the perfect accessory for your Hillary Duff-worshipping niece or your great aunt Sophie. Because Katy knows every handbag makes a statement about its owner, she strives to make each design fresh, interesting and fun. The current Katydid Collection includes "Better Off Red", "Simply Sublime", "SoHo Sassy" and more available in handbags, totes or wristlets/cosmetic bags. Katy is currently collaborating with friend and artist Carla Rawson. Together they have released the first of the limited edition "Katydid girls" collection.
