Description

The name "Kawaihoa" represents the special heritage from which this organization was founded. "Ka wai" - the water, represents the many Kumu Hula and Halau that have shared their knowledge and experiences, like the life-giving waters; "hoa" - companion or friend, or to bind; represents the bond of these relationships and friendships that are important for our development and growth.

Under the direction of Kumu Hula Greg Lontayao, Hälau Kawaihoa and Noa Noa Te Tiare Polynesian Dance Company was established to perpetuate the traditions and the culture of the hula and polynesian dance. The style of hula and polynesian dances is taught in its form as passed down through generations and teachings. The course teaches hula kahiko (ancient dances), hula 'auana (modern hula), and dances of Polynesia, with extreme emphasis on the expressions, emotions, interpretation, the visualization and the history behind each dance defined by its origin. There are two levels of classes, competitive and non-competitive, students can opt for either level and allowed to move between the two levels with advance notice and instructor permission.

Listed below are the basic structures and fundamentals, which each student will learn and acquire throughout the course. These basic structures and fundamentals are practiced in class and should also be practiced at home. Each student will be required to participate in all basic structures and fundamentals listed below. Including written and oral exams when given by the teacher.
