- I was always a creative child who drew and built Air-fix kits from an early age and was pretty good at art in school, and now I look back, I realise that art was the only subject I liked and concentrated on, which explains my one and only ‘O’ level. However, my art teacher advised me not to follow a career in art as it would be a hard way to make a living, and as I didn’t receive any other encouragement from anywhere else, I chose to learn a trade. Barnsley Art College ran a sign writing and specialist interior decorating course, which I completed but didn’t enjoy. I had a few spells of self employment in these trades until I finally realised they were not for me. By this time, I had forgotten all about my love of art, and didn’t know what I wanted to be, and for years therefore fell in and out of any job I could (usually the minimum wage).
