Keweenaw Land Trust - Home
edit Description
The Keweenaw Land Trust was founded in 1996 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. We work with local landowners in Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga counties to establish conservation easements on their properties, and also accept donations of land with conservation value. We rely on our members for support and encourage you to get involved in helping us protect the land of the Keweenaw. In addition to protecting lands directly, we encourage protections through public education and outreach.
Often known as "conservancies," land trusts hold land or land attributes like financial trusts hold money and equities. Land trusts protect land permanently by working with property owners to guide land usage and future development.
By preserving these lands, the Keweenaw Land Trust provides the public with opportunities for education about sustainable land management, enhancing wildlife and plant habitat, and the value of open spaces. This assures that future generations will be able to enjoy these lands as we do.
