Komen Houston Race for the CureĀ® :
Description edit
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of volunteers working through local Affiliates to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The Foundation runs one of the most innovative and responsive grant programs in breast cancer today. In addition to funding research, the Foundation and its Affiliates fund community-based breast health education, screening and treatment projects for the uninsured and medically underserved.
The Komen Houston Affiliate was established in 1991 with a small group of volunteers. Today, we have more than 1,300 volunteers raising money and awareness in the battle against breast cancer. In the six county area we serve, the Komen Houston Affiliate has given more than $9.3 million to help fight this disease and an additional $3.1 million for breast cancer research.
The Komen Houston Race for the CureĀ® is the largest foot race in Houston and each year continues to grow with more than 25,000 participants attending in 2005. Other fundraising events include the Pink Tie Gala and the Pink Ribbon Reception, both held in the spring.
