Dean was born in Pennsylvania and like many of his characters, had a troubled childhood. His father was an abusive alcoholic and his mother was often ill. Dean overcame many obstacles to become the wonderful and admired author that he is. He sold original short fiction stories to friends and family at the young age of eight, and look at him now!
When Dean was in college he won a fiction writing competition, and has continued to write. Dean has always had a love for writing, although it wasn't always his main source of income. Before he was a writer Dean had several other jobs. He has been an English teacher and a youth counselor for underprivileged kids.
