Bound by the Rio Laja river, which cuts through the canyon, it has striking vistas. The 25 foot high cacti and 300 year old mesquites and pepper trees date back to when the hacienda was first built. The exotic old walls remain, and are marked on the map. Fifty fruit trees and an organic garden yield a harvest to share. A lovingly planted garden, including 20 types of lavender, adds even more beauty. Several small ponds attract birds and nearby are wetlands observation points, marked by a local ecological group. A few miles away is La Huerta, with the second largest tree in Mexico, a Sabino or cypress thirty meters high and wide (see surroundings). Horse tours are available to explore the canyon and remains of ancient Chichimeca pyramids and historic chapels along the river, inaccessible by car.
The area is secluded, and reputed to have been Pancho Villa's work camp, or El Batan. The ten acres are on a rock road which was once a railway bed and you cut through a mountain tunnel for 500 meters to reach it, two miles from the Presa Allende lake, twelve miles from the historic town of San Miguel. The restaurants,shops,galleries, and diverse cultural events found there make it a major tourist attraction. It was also listed in the June 2002 Money magazine list of the eight best places to retire!
