- I went to Carcassonne for the first time fifteen years ago. Straight away, I felt I knew the place, understood it. The quality of light, the mountains in the distance, the way reminders of the region's bloody and traumatic history lay all around, like scars on the landscape. It was familiar, even though I'd never been there before, and I was fascinated. I walked and explored and learned about the Cathars, thirteenth century Christians, condemned as heretics, whose ghosts still linger. I read everything and anything, out of fascination rather than with any purpose. I had other projects and commitments. I had in my mind the idea for a novel about myths and legends, secrets and ancient societies, a story about how secrets endure, change shape and are passed down through generations-a Grail story which would turn the accepted stories on their heads, a pre-Christian Grail. My imaginary landscape was to be Egypt, not France.
