A few years ago, my brother and I purchased a Lake House and found a property management company to help us market and manage it. When we signed up they were charging over 25%, and at the time we thought it would be worth it if they could help us generate income by finding people wanting to rent it. Managing the property does take some work, but not a great deal. The main thing we were looking for was a company to help us find people wanting to rent our house, a truly valuable service. We also decided to list our property online, even though we did not find any great rental sites on the web. So we made our own site and marketed it.
After working with the property management company for 4 weeks, they had rented out our house for a total of 1 day! We had rented it out on our own for 20 days! We did 20 times better than they did, all from our own website. Even worse, they would not give us a discount (or referral fee) if we found the renters ourselves. So we said good-bye to the management company and set off on our own.
After a while, other people began asking us to help them rent their properties because they knew of our successes. By now, we were renting out a couple of our own houses and had such a demand that we had to give away referrals to other property owners. We received such great feedback that we thought we should help more people get their properties rented out and generate income for themselves. And that is how LakeRentals.com was born.
