Generic Lamotrigine – Its uses
Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant drug which is used for the treatment of epilepsy and psychological conditions like bipolar disorder, Depersonalization disorder, depression and Borderline personality disorder. It is marketed in US and Europe with a brand name called as Lamictal manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. In case of epilepsy, the drug is used for many conditions such as for the treatment of focal seizures (also known as partial seizures), primary and secondary tonic-clonic illness and the epileptic fits caused by Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epileptic disease.
Drug strengths and dosage
Lamotrigine, popularized in the Europe and States as Lamictal is a routinely prescribed drug for treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder and seizures. Marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, this anticonvulsant is phenyltriazine by its chemical nature. The first effective stabilizer, the drug dose cause blockage of sodium channel pathways. The drug comes with a warning that says fatal skin reaction can occur inclusive of Stevens–Johnson syndrome, DRESS syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Statistics suggest dosing has a 5 to 10 percent chance of developing a rash and if so happens, the patient should discontinue usage and consult the physician. The level must be kept in check as overdose can trigger serious skin issues. The manufacturer has made it available in scored tablets as well as chewable ones that are of lower milligram strength. 2008 onwards Teva made it available in generic form as well. GSK has launched its extended version (shortened as Lamictal XR) that is basically the regular one with a coating that goes by patented name DiffCORE.

Lamotrigine, also marketed as Lamictal drug, is an anticonvulsant and anti-epileptic medicine that has been used for treatment of epilepsy and maintenance of several psychological disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as anxiety and Depersonalization disorder. The medicine has been used for over thirty years and directly acts on neurotransmitters to block, modulate or inhibit electrical activity, thereby preventing focal, absence and tonic-clonic seizures, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome’s seizures and working as a mood stabilizer. But alike other drugs, this medicine too has several adverse effects which need to be controlled and monitored during drug interactions and their effect on every single patient must be studied. Some mild to medium adverse effects of Lamotrigine have been found in recent studies. These side effects are a result of inhibited sodium channels in neurotransmitters.
