Description
Braced against a hot, gritty wind, Herman Almarez is well into his fourth hour as a human sign for Brandon Fine Furniture. Sure, maybe he really wants to inspire in passersby thoughts of dinette sets and China hutches. But at the moment, Almarez seems more interested in using the ad as a shield against a particularly merciless gale. At least the people are more forgiving than the elements. On this Saturday afternoon, the suburban hordes rolling south in an SUV caravan take little notice of the man, who stands in the dirt among a small forest of billboards, trailer ads, posters and other signs.
Judging by the Hunger and Homelessness Task Force meeting, the folks in town for the U.S. Conference of Mayors were more interested in partying than politics.
Immediately after Sept. 11, 2001, the powers that be sat cautiously, if briefly, before going on the warpath. The corporate elite, however, launched its attack before the New York skyline could even peek through the clouds of ash. Radio behemoth Clear Channel blacklisted anything that could be considered politically and socially conscious (read: liberal), such as anything by Rage Against the Machine, or, um, Tom Petty's break-up hit "Free Fall," or, even more inexplicably, John Lennon's peace anthem, "Imagine" (provoking Neil Young to play it during the America: Tribute to Heroes telethon, which handily stole the show).
