Title

Lena Mae Soaps

Description

Growing up on a small farm in Branchville, Virginia, the eldest girl of 10 children, my grandmother, Lena Mae DeBerry DeLoatch (we affectionately called her Nina), was taught how to make "lye" soap (as she called it), by her mother Julia Joyner DeBerry. Nina taught my mother, Virely Mae DeLoatch Davis how to make this soap that in turn taught me (Pamela).

As a child, I remember watching Nina make soap over a cast iron stove. Although the soap making process was quite tedious (hot processing method), the end result was truly a labor of love. For many years her soaps were a staple in our household and rarely did we buy any bar soap. So now the soap bug bites the third generation!

She was a remarkable woman who was always known for making something useful out of anything that others would have considered waste. I look back and think of her as a pioneer of recycling in our home! Besides, some of here handmade quilts remain with me. Although she passed away in 1985, my memory of her has not. So in her memory, LENA MAE SOAPS… is named.
