Sheldon O. Burman, is a Board-certified surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has been an examiner for the American Board of Surgery. He is a Founding Member, an Executive Board member and Secretary of the American Academy of Phalloplasty Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the International Society for Impotence Research, an Associate Fellow of the Society for the Study of Impotence of the American Urological Association, and a member of the Impotence Institute of America. Dr. Burman has been Invited Surgeon and demonstrated both penile insertions and phalloplasties in Israel, Greece, Turkey and Brazil. He has been a Career Investigator of the Health Research Council of New York and an Associate in Research of the Medical Research Council of Great Britain. He has been Professor of Surgery and Department or Division Head at Sherbrooke University Medical School in Quebec, Canada, The University of Illinois College of Medicine (Chicago) and the V.A. Hospital, and the University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. Dr. Burman is a Contributing Editor of Men's Exercise and a regular contributer to "Muscle and Fitness", "Men's Health", "Men's Exercise", "Exercise for Men Only", and "Cycle and Fitness". He has appeared on nationally syndicated television with Oprah Winfrey, Geraldo (twice), Maury Povich, Inside Edition, Jenny Jones, Sonia Live and The Shirley Show (twice). He has appeared more than 100 times on radio interviews.

Twenty years ago Dr. Burman founded the Male Sexual Dysfunction Clinic, which is now the oldest and largest practice of its kind dealing exclusively with problems of male sexuality. He has performed over 2000 enhancement phalloplasties in the past 9 years. His early report on his first 200 cases was presented at the VI World Meeting on Impotence of the ISIR in Singapore, October 1994. His recent paper on his review of over 700 personal cases was delivered at the International Symposium on Penile Disorders, Hamburg, Germany in January 1996. A recent review of 1200 phalloplasties was presented in Barcelona and again in Cairo in 2000.
