libertus.net: about censorship and free speech
Description edit
libertus.net is provided and maintained by Irene Graham (contact details below). I'm located in Brisbane, the capital city of the State of Queensland in north-east Australia. Queensland is commonly known as the "Sunshine State" and while this is true insofar as the weather is concerned, Queensland's censorship laws are reminiscent of the Dark Ages.
In Queensland it is illegal to sell, to adults, books and magazines classified unsuitable for children. Many adult Queenslanders don't know that the government treats them like children. Generally, of course, one doesn't see (or even hear about) banned material; that's the purpose of censorship. However, some people become aware of the archaic censorship laws after travelling interstate, overseas, or via the Internet.
I'm Executive Director of Electronic Frontiers Australia Inc. (EFA), a nationwide on-line civil liberties organisation which is the most active group in Australia opposing government attempts to censor the Internet. I joined EFA in 1995 and was a volunteer Board Member and Information Officer from February to September 1996. I rejoined the Board in October 1997 as Secretary and Membership Officer and from 1999 my role was extended to include financial administration. I accepted the position of Executive Director in May 2000.
