Description
The site is php enabled, though you won't notice it. It's quite nice. All you have to do is create a file with content in it and the preprocessor takes care of everything else. The site design is stored in a single file with all page objects stored in seperate files. I can have multiple site designs for different browsers or for people coming from different domains, all without having to rely on any client end solutions (like Javascript etc). Its a beautiful solution since it is completely transparent to the client. It kicks ASP.
Linville.org is hosted on a rack of Apple X-Serves with a RAID Level 5... Err, no. It used to be hosted on a Pentium 166 with 16 MB of RAM but we upgraded to a Pentium Pro 200 loaded with a whopping 64 MB of RAM. The internet is a dangerous place, but the server was running OpenBSD. In the desert of the Internet, our little box was an oasis of security. All was good.
Alas, then two things happened. First, the place the box was co-located started to suck ass. We, uh, had a free co-lo so we didn't really have a service level agreement for which we could complain about. Secondly, my website started attracting a fair amount of traffic (primarily due to one stupid webpage). So, I sucked it up and started paying a montly fee to have Linville.org hosted at DreamHost. They are using unfortunately Linux, but hey, at least it isn't Windows. That and they've got mad bandwidth, so all you people who like my personal photo gallery should be much happier. :-) DreamHost is an excellent hosting provider, if you like them, please sign up using my referral!
