Title
The Little Potter - Horsehair Raku Pottery - Arizona
Description
Kurt Unterschuetz and Caryn Unterschuetz are craft persons in the classical sense, and find themselves endlessly intrigued by the transformation of earth and its elements into art and function.
Working as professional potters and artisans since the early 1990s, the Unterschuetzes are recognized for their unique horsehair raku pottery. The technique originated with the Japanese, and involves heating handthrown pots to 1,000 degrees in a special kiln, then laying horsehair across the hot pottery to oxidize and produce beautiful designs. They also create a line of spongeware function, which remains a perennial favorite with collectors of Unterschuetz pottery.
Caryn is a multi-media artist, and is best known for her Chinese brushstroke work, which is available as prints, or as part of Kurt's line of porcelain bowls and pots.
