LiveJournal is a social network, an online community where you can express yourself in any way you want. It is website created with the aim of creating a place where people from all over the world can connect with each other, communicate their thoughts and just be themselves.

LiveJournal came into existence in March 1999. It was started by Brad Fitzpatrick to keep update his high school friends about his activities. It was in January 2005, that the blogging software corporation, Six Apart bought Danga Interactive, which was the company which operated LiveJournal, from Mr. Fitzpatrick. LiveJournal's mascot is Frank the goat and is treated as if it is in reality a living being.

Blogging has a come a long way and today there are many sites specifically dedicated to it. Blogging is no more about just writing about your day to day activities but making it more and more interesting and attractive by adding pictures, sound files and other related media files. But LiveJouranl is a site that not only allows you to post your blogs but also acts as a social networking site that gives you ample options for you to decide what you want the world to know, what you want your friends to know and what should remain your personal entry.

There are facilities of voice posting, text and instant messaging and notifications to stay in touch with your friends and family.

Undoubtedly the feature that distinguishes LiveJournal from its counterparts is its "friends list". It gives this site a solid social side apart from the usual blogging services. LiveJournal allows you to customize your account in a variety of ways. For example, the S2 language allows you to modify your journal templates. You can have your very own graphical avatars, or choose to have a "userpic", next to your username. as a user you also get a "User Info" page, that will contain a wide variety of data that includes your contact information, a short biography of yours, some images that can be linked from offline sources also, and your friend lists, communities, interests along with name of the schools that you have attended or are currently attending.

If you want to prohibit it completely then you can tick the option of "friends only". LiveJournal allows you to create your own custom friends groups within your extended group of friends so as to additionally restrict friends who can read a particular post.

Just like most of the popular web blogging sites, LiveJournal also offers you to post comments on the blogs and journal entries of other users. There is a message board for that. Here also you can customize your account so that you will receive comments only from your friends or from users. You can also choose to display certain comments and ignore others. Apart from that LiveJournal also acts as a host to many group journals, or communities.

Talking about some statistics, it has been observed that there are more than thirteen million accounts. Most of the users are of age group 15 to 24 years. And amongst those who gave their gender in the personal details form, just one third were males. It has been observed that LiveJournal is most well-liked in the English-speaking countries. United States of America seems to have by far the highest number of users amongst people who chose to provide their address. Apart from Americans, there are a noticeably good number of Russians too.
