Title

Lloyd's Hand Turned Wood Bowls - Decorative and Functional

Description

The bowls I make first take shape in a process called "green turning" when the wood is full of natural moisture. This type of turning allows the wood to release its internal stresses and take a natural free form. This natural free form is the trademark of my bowls.

After the bowl has been air dried for several weeks it is ready for finishing. The bowl is then remounted on the lathe and sanded to a fine finish. Then the bowl is hand rubbed with olive oil to bring out the grain and color and provide a clean, natural, food - safe finish.

I do not cut down live trees for making my bowls. Finding the high quality wood required for making my bowls takes at least half of the time I devote to my craft. All of the wood for my bowls comes from trees that have fallen during storms, from orchards that were removed for replanting or from trees removed for other land development purposes.
