I have been practicing Neurosurgery for 15 years. I perform all types of neurosurgery, including spine, brain, peripheral nerve surgery, carotid artery surgery, and gamma knife surgery for brain tumors. My experience in spinal surgery ranges from "straightforward" discectomies to complex spinal fusions, minimally invasive spine surgery, kyphoplasty, and spinal cord stimulators. I surgically approach the spine posteriorly as well as anteriorly, and have performed over 1300 operations on the lumbar spine, and over 1000 operations on the neck. I have authored numerous peer reviewed papers in the neurosurgical journals, several chapters in neurosurgical texts, and have authored a textbook "Microsurgical Anatomy of the Brain: A Stereo Atlas." I am co-founder of www.cyberacuity.com , a company which produces educational animations, CD's, DVD's, websites, and Palm Pilot Applications for corporations and physicians. In addition, being an avid weight lifter and runner, I have discovered that there are many options in the treatment of low back and lower extremity pain. Even though I am a surgeon, I try to keep surgery as an option for those patients I feel will not benefit from more conservative care.

I have found, over years of practicing neurosurgery, that certain non-surgical approaches seem to consistently work better than others. That is why we have started the Kraus Back and Neck Institute, which is dedicated to attempting to improve low back and neck pain, and extremity pain, without the need for surgery. Some of the equipment used are the Accu Spina machines for IDD Therapy. We also have the dedicated MedX Medical Lumbar and MedX Medical Cervical machines, which allow isolation of the lumbar and cervical spines, for strengthening and testing. If these techniques don't work, we can consider surgical intervention, when needed. As one of my patients succinctly stated, "we can always cut, but we can't uncut." I find that most patients appreciate this philosophy, especially if they can achieve significant improvement in pain without the inconvenience, risk and cost of an operation.
